Rob Donaldson was born in Falkirk, Scotland.
From a young age: He can remember sketching a Roman soldier from a book as young as 6 or 7. He had many eventful times in his youth, and he feels that if it wasn't for art he would have been a handful. Starting out: He left school at 15 to work in building and civil engineering and construction until he was 19 or 20 and in his spare time started learning his craft as a sculptor and painter. In 1974 he was asked by "Puck Toys" if he would like to sculpt their originals of the Beatrix Potter characters. He was employed for 6 years as Head Sculptor as well as working for other bronze companies as a freelance artist. Famous work colleagues: He continued to work in a new venture of special effects for the film industry based in London called "Concepts and Interpretation" run by Alan Craggs. He worked with many famous people; Laurence Olivier, John Craven, Nigel Mansell and many more. HRH The Queen: Rob was commissioned by the Queen to sculpt for Porcelain "Mulgrave Supreme" a Clevland Bay Hunter horse. This was soon followed by 'Rio' the Queen's lead horse of the state coach. Prince Phillip's 4-in-hand followed 10 years later which was over 4 ft in length, in bronze and on a verde marble base, Prince Phillip's favourite colour. Over the many years that circumstances allowed, Rob has worked for; Wedgewood, Coalport, M.B.I. Country Artists and many more, sculpting for his living. Portraiture is a very real love of Rob's as well as landscape. In fact, he does say he likes everything and everybody until proven otherwise. "It is not only men in fine suits that have fine thoughts." Wordsworth |
